Ireland: Alphabet Series – A Touring Exhibition from Cork Printmakers
Extract from Marie Gilroy’s ‘Out of Order’ (2010)
Founded in 1972, Irish Arts Center is a New York-based arts and cultural center dedicated to projecting a dynamic image of Ireland and Irish America for the 21st century, building community with artists and audiences of all backgrounds, and preserving the stories and traditions of Irish culture for generations to come. Our multi-disciplinary programming is centered around three core areas: Performance; Exhibition; and Education.
Ireland: Alphabet Series
This exhibition consists of 26 prints by 26 artists, each work taking a letter of the alphabet as a starting point.
Cork Printmakers, a fine art print studio and arts service organization, invited participating artists to investigate what a specifically “Irish” alphabet would look like. Artists were encouraged to be ‘humorous, confessional, personal, subtle, ironic, iconic, or controversial; and to take on cultural and economic challenges that are relevant to contemporary Ireland.’ The result is a rich, varied exhibition executed in a range of styles and printmaking techniques.
There is an Artist Talk and Reception on Wednesday, April 20 at 6:30pm.
