Imagine Ireland

The connections between Ireland and America are rooted in a myriad of commonalities, some tangible, others intangible, all highly symbolic. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in the arts. The tiny island nation with a population the size of Philadelphia has generated, arguably, some of the 20th century’s most influential artists, including William Butler Yeats, James Joyce and Samuel Beckett. Many Irish artists have made their mark on both sides of the Atlantic with Irish music, theatre, literature and dance carrying the cultural markers of identity across an ocean and down through generations.

Imagine Ireland, a year of Irish arts in America in 2011, presents another chapter in this story and one which we hope will offer fresh insights into contemporary Irish life as well as Irish America.

This calendar of culture features hundreds of Irish and Irish-American artists, companies and organisations, presenting over 300 events across more than 40 US states, throughout 2011. Collectively, they represent a tour-de-force of artistic energy, crossing the continent to re-imagine Ireland’s cultural imprint on America.
