Imagine Dance

The dancing body in Ireland is firmly placed at the centre of our cultural landscape: a recognition of the ability of dance to enter dialogue with all levels of society.*

While traditional dance has long been at the centre of Irish cultural identity in Ireland and in America, contemporary dance in Ireland is still a relatively young discipline. Irish dance artists are confidently developing a distinctive style and vocabulary, often in collaborative practice, and always keeping an eye cast westwards across the Atlantic.

For decades, many Irish dancers and choreographers have trained with US teachers. The impact of eminent American choreographers such as Merce Cunningham and Deborah Hay can be seen on many Irish artists. In recent years, increasingly frequent collaborations have taken wing between Irish and American dance artists and a selection of these are presented as part of Imagine Ireland.
