Guests of the Nation: with score by Niall Byrne

This project presents the international premiere of film composer Niall Byrne’s new orchestral score for Denis Johnston’s Guests of the Nation (1935). The film, based on Frank O Connor’s short story of friendship between British soldiers and their IRA captors, is a moving anti-war film, which features early film performances from Cyril Cusack and Barry Fitzgerald. The film is extraordinary for its cinematic purity and crystal clear narrative and is an unseen treasure in the Irish silent film canon. The film will be brought to life with film composer Niall Byrne’s powerful new score, which will be performed by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. The programme will also feature Andrew Legge’s new silent short film The Lactating Automaton with live music and foley score.
